Cyprus v Wales - Live and Exclusive on S4C

S4C will be providing live and exclusive coverage of Saturday’s Euro 2008 qualifying match between Cyprus and Wales.

The Channel will have free-to-view terrestrial coverage on S4C and S4C digital, live from the GPS Stadium, Nicosia, with coverage starting at 4.55pm. S4C will also show extensive highlights of the match at 10.00pm.

Pel-droed Rhyngwladol: Cyprus v Cymru will be available on analogue and all digital platforms in Wales and on Sky 134 in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, with live English subtitles available.

The exclusive broadcasting rights to the Cyprus v Wales match follows the recent announcement of a four-year deal with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) giving S4C the terrestrial television rights to Welsh international and domestic football from the start of the 2008/09 season.

David Collins, Secretary General of the FAW said: “The FAW is delighted that S4C will be showing the Cyprus v Wales live on all its platforms. This shows the continuing commitment of S4C to football in Wales and build on the excellent relationship between our two organisations.”

Wrexham Supporters’ Association Annual General Meeting

Wrexham Supporters’ Association is holding its AGM at the Llay Welfare on October 31st at 7pm. All members are invited to attend and new members can join us on the night. There will be a general knowledge quiz following the AGM at 8pm – entry is £5 for a team of four.

Following the retirement of Ray Clarke, Dave Davies and Phil Davies last season the Supporters’ Association is now looking for new people to join our committee. Last season we raised almost £20,000 from the 50/50 competition and the NEWI Car Park and we’re looking for new people and new ideas to raise even more money.

Kevin Hughes has already joined us to organise the 50/50 competition on matchdays following Phil Davies’ retirement, whilst Paul Evans is helping us to improve the co-ordination of our membership section. This is an exciting time to join the Supporters’ Association as we look to bring new people on board and work with the football club to make it a success.

Cape Town Red wants to rediscover his Welsh roots

Wrexham Supporters’ Association is trying to put a Wrexham fan based in Cape Town in South Africa back in touch with his cousins who are believed to live in the Wrexham area.

Ronnie Edwards, a referee assessor and member of the Cape Town Tygerberg Referee’s Association, is trying to locate his father’s family whom he believes still live in the Wrexham area. Ronnie’s father, the late John Edward Edwards, was born and raised in Wrexham before he emigrated to South Africa to get married just after the Second World War.

John Edwards was the son of the late Emma Sarah Edwards and Samuel Edward Edwards of Wrexham. He had three brothers, Albert George, Cyril Raymond and Leonard Robert Edwards and three sisters, Brenda, Irene and Stella. Ronnie understands that his aunt, Irene, still lives in the Wrexham area and has a daughter called Wendy who is married to Christopher.

Unfortunately Ronnie does not know Wendy and Christopher’s surname, but understands that they have two sons called Steven and Mark. Ronnie would very much like to get back in touch with Irene and his cousins, Steven and Mark. Ronnie still follows Wrexham’s results from South Africa and has just become a member of Wrexham Supporters’ Association.

The fans’ Player of the Season Awards Dinner is being held once again at the highly recommendable Lion Quays Hotel(Between Chirk and Oswestry) on Sunday 6th May.

This superb event is organised by the recognised supporters groups, and the same successful formula that has proved so popular in recent years is being repeated.

This is a fans day, for the fans, with all the first team squad and management staff present. The event is due to start at 1.30pm, and following introductions diners will be served an excellent three course dinner.

Our after dinner speaker, will be Dave Watson, a defensive stalwart with a career spanning 21 years, including 419 appearances for Everton and 12 England caps. This will be followed by the supporters groups presentations from the season past.

The presentations will be then be followed by Liverpudlian comedian, and Radio Merseyside presenter Willie Miller, and will be concluded with a fund raising auction of football memorabilia. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon before a long overdue summer break!

Show your support for Wrexham FC

The Evening Leader wants to hear from fans all across the world in a show of support to keep the Reds up. The Leader is throwing its support behind Wrexham Football Club who are on the verge of relegation.

Supporters and residents have all spoken out about the importance of keeping Brian Carey’s team in League Two. But the Reds have only five games left to save themselves from relegation into the Nationwide Conference.

Successful businessman and Wrexham FC’s co-owner, Neville Dickens, is only too aware of the benefits of Wrexham having a Football League club.

“Wrexham as a town deserves a Football League club - it is important that we keep our status,” he said.

“Having a Football League club in the town gives an economic boost to Wrexham - not just from visiting fans but from our own fans who provide a big income to businesses in the town center,” Mr Dickens added.

So come on, we want to hear your comments and messages of support to the club.

“It’s just like watching Wrexham,” sang the Wales fans on Tuesday night when our national side beat Lichtenstein 4-0 at the Racecourse.

Super Stevie Evans capped a fantastic week with his first Welsh cap against the smallest national team in Europe. Evans was superb against Stevenage last weekend, his constant running eventually setting up Danny Williams’s goal. Against Lichtenstein, Evans looked every bit the seasoned international player and should be given another chance to shine in the not too distant future.

It was back to business last weekend after the Hall of Fame award night. Unfortunately Brian Flynn and Johnny Edwards were unable to attend due to previous engagements, so the Association is planning to present awards to these legends in the near future. Flynn has already received word of his award and is said to be making room in his trophy cabinet for the certificate!

The Association is very pleased to announce that Dave Mcguire won the 50/50 draw against Stevenage with winning number 04999. For those of you who don’t know Dave, he’s worked extremely hard in the Club Shop and thoroughly deserves his good fortune. Dave has also signed up almost 250 members for the Association this season from the Club Shop.

Oh what a night! Many thanks to everyone who made the Hall of Fame award ceremony such a success last weekend.

Wrexham Supporters’ Association inducted 7 new members into the renowned Hall of Fame at a packed Centenary Club. Brian Carey, Brian Flynn, Bert Goode, Ray Smith and Mike Williams were inducted alongside Johnny Edwards and Wrexham Supporters’ Trust for their outstanding contribution to Wrexham Football Club.

It was a fantastic night for all concerned and very well supported by supporters and players’ families. In particular we’d like to thank our new President Alan Fox for making the long journey down from Hartlepool with his family. As always it was a pleasure to see him back at the Racecourse with his lovely wife Jean.

Event organiser, Dave Davies, who first came up with the idea for the Hall of Fame in 2002 said:

“It was wonderful to see so many people attend the Hall of Fame night to pay tribute to the people who’ve made this club great. After the problems of the last few years it was great to get back to being a fan again and remembering the achievements of players such as Ray Smith, who is the only Wrexham to have scored against Liverpool at the famous KOP end.”

A win at last! Wrexham’s victory against Bristol Rovers last weekend felt like a cup win! There was a huge and collective sense of relief after Tom Craddock finished Rovers off with a superb solo effort. Hopefully we can build on this victory and still achieve something this season.

Tonight is the night when Wrexham fans reflect on the achievements of their heroes inaugurated into the Hall of Fame. Wrexham Supporters’ Association launched the Hall of Fame in September 2003 to mark the achievements of former players, officials and fans who have contributed so much to this great club.

There are some great names in the Hall of Fame: Tommy Bamford, Alan Fox, Mel Sutton, Gary Bennett and Denis Smith to name a few. They are players, managers, staff and fans who have been and still are legends in the eyes of Wrexham fans; people who have often dedicated their lives to Wrexham Football Club. Tonight we will make a special award to Wrexham Supporters’ Trust for their role in saving Wrexham FC.

After our eighth defeat in nine matches, we could certainly do with a few clean sheets! Hopefully Craig Morgan will provide some experience and stability at the back and, who knows, could return permanently when the transfer window opens in January.

Another Wrexham defender who could always be relied upon was Mike Williams. Mike joined Wrexham Football Club in 1985 and played 232 times for the Robins (as we were nicknamed back then) until a knee injury ended his career. Mike was the first player to be awarded Wrexham Supporters’ Association Player of the Season award in successive seasons (1985/6 and 1986/87). Fittingly he was awarded a testimonial match against his former club, Chester City, which Wrexham won!

In recognition of his contribution to Wrexham Football Club, Mike Williams will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on November 3rd, 2006 at the Centenary Club. Mike now runs the Hope and Anchor pub in Buckley and will be joined on the night by a large contingent from Buckley Reds. Thanks for coming down to support this event lads! Big Brian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame

Wrexham returned to league and cup action this week with defeats against MK Dons and Rochdale respectively. On a positive note, Craig Morgan celebrated his call up to the Welsh squad with a return on loan to the club that launched his career. However, Smith’s small squad was dealt a further blow with news that Neil Roberts needs an operation on his troublesome ankle.

Craig returns to strengthen Wrexham’s defence which has been weakened by the loss of Denis Lawrence and injuries to key players. The retirement of Brian Carey has also been significant in that he brought so much experience to the team. Brian has remained at the club in a coaching capacity and has a big influence on the excellent young players coming through.

Big Brian joined Wrexham in 1991 on loan from Manchester United and immediately made a big impression. He later joined Leicester City after failing to breakthrough into a world class United team, before joining Wrexham permanently in a £100,000 deal in 1996. His signing was pivotal to the team that Brian Flynn built in the 1990’s and was key to much of the FA Cup and league success.

Wrexham players on international duty

Wrexham’s players had a good rest last weekend when the Bury match was postponed due to international call-ups. The rest gave Neil Roberts and Darren Ferguson extra time to recover from injuries, while Chris Llewelyn, Mark Jones, Ryan Valentine and Mike Ingham joined up with the Wales and Northern Ireland squads.

Wrexham’s Welsh contingent trained with Team Wales for the Slovakia match, but did not make the final squad, which was not a bad thing considering the final score! However, they can all feel proud to have made the squad and take confidence in the fact that Toshack and his management team are watching the young Dragons.

One former Wrexham legend now playing a key role in the Welsh set-up is Brian Flynn. Our former manager and midfielder was instrumental in the development of Colliers Park training ground and for unearthing players such as Brian Hughes, Gareth Owen and David Brammer. Flynn is now playing a key role in developing the young Welsh stars of the future for John Toshack.

Wrexham Supporters' Association 'Hall of Fame'

Wrexham’s defensive problems were exposed again last week, with another defeat away to Hartlepool United. However, whilst the last few weeks have been difficult for the Dragons, it’s easy to forget that we nearly didn’t have a football club.

Wrexham FC groundsman Johnny Edwards was presented with a special FAW Services to Football this week for his outstanding contribution to football. Wrexham Supporters’ Association also plans to recognise Johnny Edwards’ longstanding contribution to Wrexham Football Club by inaugurating him to the Hall of Fame. The Association plans to make a special award to Johnny for his services to Wrexham FC at a very special award ceremony in November 3rd.

We will also be making a special award to Wrexham Supporters’ Trust for their outstanding contribution to the very survival of Wrexham Football Club. Put simply, if it wasn’t for the Trust we wouldn’t have a club to support. Whilst it’s disappointing that the Trust will not be able to buy shares or have a seat on the Board in the short-term it is clear that they’re here for the long-haul and will play a pivotal role in the future of this club. Keep up the good work lads!

SWEET to rock the William Aston Hall

70’s Glam Rock band SWEET will be rocking the William Aston Hall in aid of Wrexham Supporters’ Trust in October.

The concert takes place on Saturday 14th October 2006 at the William Aston Hall, Wrexham with doors opening at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £15 in advance, or £17 on the night. A booking fee will be charged on any postal or telephone orders of £3 per order.

Andy Scott of SWEET is Wrexham born and they still have a large following both here in the UK and in Europe and have been touring home and abroad since the 70’s. Amongst Sweet’s greatest hits were Blockbuster, Teenage Rampage, Ballroom Blitz and Fox on The Run.

After two heavy defeats, the Dragons salvaged their pride and gave Birmingham City a run for their money in the Carling Cup this week.

The cup performance underlined the players’ determination to get things back on track and should give the team a good boost when they return to league action. With a number of key players out injured, Denis Smith did well to assemble a team that took this former Premiership club to extra time. Well done lads!

Denis worked wonders while Wrexham were in administration. Wrexham were limited to a squad of just 20 players and had to bring in loan players to boost the squad on a number of occasions. Wrexham Supporters’ Association were proud to support Denis whenever we could, contributing towards the signing of players such as Lee McEvilly and paying for the hotel costs of loan players such as Ben Foster.

In total, Wrexham Supporters’ Association donated £33,404 to the club last season. We helped Johnny Edwards to maintain a good quality pitch by paying for expensive drainage work, something that could easily have been forgotten about. We also helped the club pay for scouts who had gone unpaid for a long period of time, something which could have damaged the club’s reputation in the long-run.

Wrexham sent a clear message out to League 2 teams by beating runaway leaders Swindon Town on Saturday.

It’s a bit early to be talking about the Player of the Year, but Mark Jones has already put a marker down with 5 goals from midfield. Mark won the Evening Leader and Wrexham Supporters’ Association Young Player of the Year award last season and will be looking to graduate to the senior award this year. There is plenty of competition though and a number of players are likely to push Mark all the way this season.

It was back to business last Thursday, September 7th when the Association held its Annual General Meeting (AGM). This was a timely meeting following Wrexham’s successful exit from administration and a time to reflect on the achievements of the past 12 months. Following the club’s change of name to Wrexham Football Club 2006, the time was right for the Association to start afresh with a new name and new President.

Resolutions to change our name to Wrexham Supporters’ Association and appoint former Wrexham centre-half, Alan Fox, as our new President were both passed. Although both changes represent a new start for the Association they also bring us closer to our roots as an organisation. The Association has traditionally been an independent organisation which aims to represent fans at all levels and celebrate the achievements of former players.
