Supporting Wrexham AFC since 1926
Wrexham AFC Official Supporters’ Association has been supporting Wrexham Football Club since 1926 and will continue to fight for the survival and success of the club in the future. Our aims remain the same as they always have been: to provide financial and hands-on support to Wrexham Football Club and to represent fans within the club. If you would like to join us or get involved in our work please pick up a membership form from the Club Shop or download one from our website at: http://www.wrexhamdragons.co.uk/membership.
50/50 Competition
Wrexham AFC Official Supporters’ Association first developed the 50/50 competition back in the 1990’s to raise money for Wrexham AFC. Last season we raised over £20,000 from ticket sales, 50% of which go to the winner and 50% to the Association at each home match. The takings from this ever-popular competition are currently being used to pay for Matt Derbyshire’s accommodation whilst on loan at Wrexham Football Club from Blackburn Rovers. Last year we paid for loan goalkeepers Ryan Harrison, Xavier Valero and Ben Foster to lodge locally and will continue to fund the day-to-day running costs of this football club whenever requested. We have also helped Johnny Edwards to maintain the pitch and will continue to help whereever we can, no strings attached.
Managing the NEWI Car Park on matchdays
We have a long-standing relationship with NEWI, which benefits supporters and students alike. The club utilises NEWI’s cark park on match days, while NEWI’s student use the club’s car park during the week. The Official Supporters’ Association manages the car park on matchdays through its team of hard working and committed stewards. Last year we raised over £8000 which was split equally between Wrexham Football Club and NEWI. So next time you hand over £2 to park in the supporters’ car park remember that half the money goes to the club and half the money goes to NEWI. Both home and away fans are welcome to park at NEWI on matchdays.
Official Away Travel
The Official Supporters’ Association no longer runs the Away Travel club, but does provide personal accident insurance and late match cancellation on behalf of its members and Wrexham Football Club. This insurance ensures our members who travel on official buses do not have to pay twice for matches that are cancelled within 6 hours of kick off. When the Chester match was cancelled in December 2005 we reimbursed the club’s costs to enable fans booked on the official away trip to travel for free when the match is re-arranged. If you are not a member of the Association and would like the benefits of personal accident insurance and late match cancellation please ask a member of staff for a membership form. Alternatively pop into the Club Shop and ask for a form to join our Association. Please note that you must be a member of the Association to benefit from this insurance.
Hospital Broadcast
Mark Griffiths has been providing invaluable match commentaries to fans in Wrexham Maelor Hospital since 1987. Mark’s excellent commentaries can also be downloaded from Wrexham AFC’s official website - he is the voice of “Wrexham World”. If you’re not already a member of Wrexham World, why not subscribe now and raise money for Wrexham Football Club? The Official Supporters’ Association funds Mark’s commentaries through the purchase of equipment and the rental of telephone lines. We’ll be raising money for the Hospital Broadcast at the Chester match on March 26th, so please show your appreciation for Mark’s tremendous efforts when you see or hear one of our volunteers shake a bucket at you!
Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF)
Wrexham AFC Official Supporters’ Association has represented Wrexham Football Club at the top table of British football supporters for 80 years and was a founding member of the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF). Last year we lobbied the FSF to recognise the hard work that Wrexham fans had put in to save Wrexham Football Club, culminating in the FSF’s Fans of the Year Award to the Official Supporters’ Association and Wrexham Supporters’ Trust. We also supported the Trust’s recent application to join the FSF and look forward to working with them on a national level to further Wrexham FC’s cause.
Carroll Clark, the Chairman of the Official Supporters’ Association, is an Officer of the FSF which regularly meets the Football League to discuss football in England and Wales. Carroll was part of a FSF delegation which recently met the Football League at their offices in Preston. As part of a 12 point agenda the FSF discussed Wrexham’s future in the Football League along with the 10-point deduction rule and the fit and proper person test. The FSF officers felt that that all three subjects were given a fair hearing and were encouraged by the discussions. Carroll will continue to fight Wrexham’s corner within the FSF and Football League whenever he can.
As active members of the FSF, the Official Supporters’ Association is currently organising the FSF’s annual conference, which will be held at the Wild Pheasant Hotel in Llangollen on June 2nd, 3rd and 4th 2006. See http://www.fsf.org.uk for more details. All fans are welcome to attend the event.
Wrexham Dragons website
Wrexham AFC Official Supporters’ Association re-launched its website (Wrexham Dragons) at the start of the 2004/05 season and has received over 800,000 hits to date. The website continues to grow and received a record 78,000 hits during February 2006. We’re now looking for sponsors to help raise even more money for Wrexham Football Club. If you are interested in advertising at Wrexham Dragons please contact rowen@wrexhamdragons.co.uk. We’d also love to hear from you if you are interested in contributing articles or match reports.
